Turns out the harmonica is originally from China, and originated from an instrument called the Sheng, which had bamboo reeds. The most common harmonica which developed on from this was the 10 hole "diatonic", each hole with two metal reeds inside. When you blow into the hole, one of the reeds vibrates and produces a sounds (or note). One you breathe in , the other reed in the hole vibrates and produces a different note - so each hole can produce two notes. The instrument was mainly used in blues music but then folk music in the 1960's.
